Rudy Fernández

Rudy Fernández

Rodolfo Fernández Farrés, known as Rudy Fernandez, was born on April 4, 1985 in Palma de Mallorca. He was the second son (his sister Marta was born on December 22, 1981), Rodolfo Fernández and Maite Farrés. The past sports of their parents, the two former basketball players, marked the fate of their children, who adopted basketball as a way of life. Rudy, who also flirted with football in his childhood, started playing in the quarry of San José Obrero, in Palma. But at age 12 Rudy and his family made a difficult and important decision: sign for Joventut and go live in Badalona. In his new city and his new club, the same one in which his parents played, he began to mature as a player and as a person, going through the different training categories.

In 2002, he won with the Joventut the prestigious junior tournament of L'Hospitalet, and was designated MVP. A few months before, with the Spanish national team of the same category, he was a silver medal in the important international tournament in Mannheim.

His projection as a player was very high, and in this way, Manel Comas made him debut with the first team of Joventut and in the ACB league in the Real Madrid field (on April 7, 2002, counting only 17 years). His progress and evolution culminated in the jump from the junior category to the first team in the 2003-2004 season, under the guidance of coach Aíto García Reneses. That same season, Rudy became one of the young stars of European basketball, being MVP of the King's Cup of Seville and best debutant of the ACB league according to the magazine Gigantes del Basket.

Rudy quickly became the benchmark of Joventut and an important piece of the Spanish team, with which he played his first Olympic Games, in Athens, the summer of 2004. The promise had come true. After renouncing the NBA to consolidate first in Europe, Rudy led the resurgence of Joventut, which led to play again the Euroleague, and became one of the leaders of the selection, which won the World Cup in Japan in 2006. That same summer, he appeared in the NBA draft and was elected in the first round by the Phoenix Suns, a team that transferred his rights to the Portland Trail Blazers. Rudy, once again, decided to continue at Joventut, leading the team in its most successful season in years (winner of the Catalan League, the Copa del Rey and the ULEB Cup), and becoming the best player in Europe MVP. It was time for the NBA. Rudy announced that he left the club all his life to go to the Portland Trail Blazers. But before going to the United States, there were the Beijing Olympics. Rudy was a key player in a team that won the silver medal on August 24, 2008 after a memorable final against the United States. Rudy scored 25 points and showed he was going to the NBA at the best moment of his career. Thus, it became the eighth Spanish to play in the NBA and the third to do so in the Blazers, after Fernando Martín and Sergio Rodríguez. On October 28, 2008 officially debuted in the NBA on the court of Los Angeles Lakers getting 16 points and 4 assists, thus becoming the best Spanish debutant in the NBA. His first stay in Real Madrid, occurs after being decreed in the summer of 2011 by the NBA a "lock out" or lockout when an agreement with the players did not reach the collective agreement and the players of this league remain in freedom to sign with any team in the world. Rudy started the 2011/12 season in the ranks of Real Madrid, to return just a few months later to the United States to the Denver Nuggets, after the reopening of the NBA. At the end of the 2011/12 season of the NBA, ended his American stage to return to Real Madrid, signing a contract for three seasons, becoming one of the best paid European players. His arrival as a star to the merengue squad, along with the Mirotic, Llull and company, have generated high expectations around the team and the enthusiasm of the fans.

In the premiere of the 2012/13 season, with the first title in play, Real Madrid was proclaimed champion of the Spanish Super Cup, defeating FC Barcelona in the final. Rudy was also named MVP of the tournament. He also rose to finish the 2012-13 season with the title of the Endesa league (on June 19, 2013), against FC Barcelona Regal. In the 2014/2015 season he also becomes European champion with Real Madrid winning the Euroleague. Actualemente continues playing at Real Madrid.
