Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal

He was born on June 3, 1986 in Manacor, Mallorca Island, Balearic Islands, Spain. His parents are Ana María Parera and Sebastián Nadal; He has a younger sister, María Isabel. He was born into a family of sportsmen, his uncle Miguel Ángel Nadal was a soccer player of FC Barcelona and of RCD Mallorca and his uncle Toni Nadal had been a tennis player. It was with this one that he started with the first racket blows at three years of age.36 He also practiced soccer, basketball and other sports, but it was at eight years of age, when he won a U-12 tennis title in Balearic Islands when his family began to believe in their possibilities.

After that title he continued participating in tennis tournaments since he was ten years old and playing football as a striker. He won tournaments in the lower categories, perhaps the most notable being the junior world championship «Le petit as», played in France.37 At the age of twelve his father encouraged him to decide between tennis or football so that he would not neglect his studies, and decided on tennis. At the age of fourteen, his family faced the decision to move to Barcelona to continue his career, as demanded by the federation. His uncle Toni was in favor of staying in Mallorca because he thought he could get there as high as leaving, which meant that the federation granted them less funding to play tournaments.38 In this situation his uncle formed a trust group to project his career, with people like his doctor Angel Ruiz Cotorro39 and imposed the rigor and discipline necessary to be an elite athlete. In an exhibition match that Pat Cash and Boris Becker celebrated in Mallorca on clay, the German was injured and Nadal was offered the opportunity to challenge him. With that opportunity, the Spaniard showed his potential in clay by defeating on May 14, 2001, a former Wimbledon champion like Pat Cash. The following year he left his footprint in junior tournaments, like his semifinalist position in 2002 in Wimbledon playing against guys older than him, and he started in Challenger tournaments reaping great appearances and several victories.
