José Manuel Martínez Fernández, known as Chema Martínez, was born in Madrid on October 22, 1971.
Along with Juan Carlos de la Ossa, José Ríos, Fabián Roncero and Julio Rey, he is one of the great Spanish long distance runners of the long Spanish tradition initiated by Constantino Miranda and Antonio Amorós and continued by the mythical Mariano Haro and Antonio Prieto.
In his palmares stand out the two medals obtained in 10000 meters in the European Championships of 2002 (gold) and 2006 (silver) held in Munich and Gothenburg respectively, in addition to many other titles in different races.Chema Martinez In 2008 he won for the first time in his career in a marathon. He finished first in the Madrid marathon.
In the Olympic Games of Beijing 2008 I am ranked 16th and was the first Spaniard to reach the finish line. A year later, in the Mediterranean Games Pescara 2009 got the silver medal in the half marathon.
At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, he crossed the finish line of the marathon in 8th place, being the first European athlete and the second non-African athlete.
In the Europeans of Barcelona 2010 he achieved his third consecutive medal in some Europeans, achieving the silver in the marathon race.
