Born into a modest family (his mother was a hairdresser and his father was a part of the Urban Guard Corp), from childhood showed a clear vocation for singing.

At the age of seven he entered the Municipal Conservatory, where he studied music theory, piano and singing with Mrs. Magda Pruneda, Professor of Choral Graciense. Since that time he began to sing everything he heard, from fragments of zarzuela and opera to popular songs, his grandfather Salvador, great music fan, taught him what he knew.

His first performance was at Radio Barcelona, ​​at the age of seven. It also debuted as a child in the Gran Teatro del Liceo making a boy soprano in the role of Trujamán in El retablo de Maese Pedro, de Falla, led by Jose Iturbi, with Manuel Ausensi as Don Quixote. In 1970 he triumphed in Madrid in Verdi's Requiem. Convalescence was slow but Carreras happily recovered thanks in part to his character and determination, and celebrated a concert in Barcelona at the Arc de Triomphe. Reappeared in July 1988 and in 1989 released the opera Christopher Columbus, Leonardo Balada.

In 1990 and 1994 concerts, called The Three Tenors, the conjunction of Carreras, Domingo and Pavarotti singing classical opera, jazz, musicals and popular music, proved to be a very attractive spectacle for millions of viewers. These collaborations in concerts with Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo have earned international fame and a place among the most important tenors of his generation. Racing is a lyric tenor of remarkable personality. He has participated in the movie Final Romance (1986) giving life to the tenor Gayarre Navarre.
