Israel Lozano

Israel Lozano

Israel Lozano, who was born in Madrid, Spain, began his operatic studies with Emelina López and Alfredo Kraus. He went on to pursue studies at the Escuela Superior de Canto and the Escuela Reina Sofía in Madrid, subsequently receiving a G.P.D. in Opera from the Peabody Conservatory (Johns Hopkins University). In 2002, Mr. Lozano became a member of the Domingo-Cafritz Young Artists Program, under the artistic direction of Plácido Domingo, and graduated from there in 2004. In 2003, he won three unprecedented prizes (in Opera, Zarzuela, and the coveted Audience Prize) at the Operalia World Opera Competition. The event was celebrated with Plácido Domingo at an internationally televised gala concert, held in Germany.

Mr. Lozano has sung leading roles at important opera houses throughout the world, among which are: the Baltimore Opera, the Washington National Opera, the Los Angeles Opera, the Palm Beach Opera, the Boston Opera, the Florida Grand Opera, Euskalduna, the Teatro Campoamor, the Canal Theatres (in Madrid), the Teatro Real of Madrid, the Zarzuela Theatre, the Theater an der Wien in Vienna, Carnegie Hall, the Teatro de Bellas Artes, the Teatro Municipal as well as other theatres and concert halls. His repertoire includes: Rodolfo in La Boheme, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Alfredo in La Traviata, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, and the Duca di Mantova in Rigoletto, in addition to operatic interpretations. He has sung principal roles at the Theater and der Wien where he shared the stage with Plácido Domingo and where he interpreted the role of Mario Ruoppolo in Daniel Catan’s Opera Il Postino and the role of Javier Moreno in Federico Moreno Torroba’s zarzuela, Luisa Fernnanda, the latter being a genre that had never before been presented in Vienna.

Mr. Lozano has worked with such stage directors as: Emilio Sagi, Pablo Viar, Ron Daniels, Graham Vick, Albert Boadella and Fucho Pereda, and such conductors/music directors as: Jesús López-Cobos, Alberto Zedda, Somtow Sucharitkul, Guillermo García Calvo, Ramón Tebar, Plácido Domingo and Gustavo Dudamel. Among upcoming major projects is a recording in New York and Los Angeles for the film The Bohemians, directed by José Luis Cortés in which Mr. Lozano sings the role of Rodolfo.
