Ángela Gheorghiu

Opera singer Angela Gheorghiu (Adjud, Romania, December 7, 1965) is one of the most famous contemporary sopranos.

Audiences and critics are almost unanimous in admiring her grip and intensity as an actress, who has shown a particular affinity with the operas of Verdi and Puccini and the verista school. Burlacu Angela is the daughter of a train conductor. Together with her sister Elena, sang opera at an early age. At thirteen, she studied singing at the Bucharest Music Academy, primarily under the tutelage of Mia Barbu. She graduated in 1989, coinciding with the fall of Nicolae Ceausescu, which allowed her to make an international career. She played the role of Mimi in her professional debut at the Opera of Cluj in 1990.

In 1994 she auditioned with Georg Solti for a new production of La Traviata. When heard, Solti said, "I cried. I had to leave. That girl is wonderful. You can do whatever you want!". That role led her to stardom.

Angela Gheorghiu is considered both an opera diva in the old style and a more modern. Besides completing opera recordings, she appeared on TV and concerts. Her first major success, this Traviata with Solti, was seen by more than one million people in the UK. She has also been accused of being a diva in the worst sense. In 2003 she loudly canceled her performance at the Teatro Real (Madrid), prompting angry criticism from the theater, her teammates and the Spanish press.

Gheorghiu has very carefully and slowly built her repertoire. Until now she make up characters that have more affinity: Violetta (La Traviata), Mimi (La Bohème), Magda (La Rondine), Adina (L'elisir d'amore), Juliette (Roméo et Juliette (Gounod)), Nedda (I Pagliacci) and Marguerite (Faust). Her voice is the voice of a lyric soprano and a dramatic soprano, but also is able to interpret spinto roles (soprano vésase in a classification).

She is divorced from her first husband, from whom she inherited her name, and is married to the French tenor Roberto Alagna in 1996. The couple has shared stages and recording studios. Gheorghiu is recognized to be very attractive, as was recently chosen as one of the 100 most beautiful women in the world by FHM magazine.
