José Mercé

José Mercé

With over 600,000 albums sold in the last 15 years, the Jerez cantaor is an artist who has managed to convey that flamenco is for everyone, taking it to the highest popularity without losing essence or jondura.

José Soto Soto (José Mercé), cantaor born in Jerez de la Frontera in 1955. Great grandchild of Paco Luz and nephew of Manuel Soto "Sordera", patriarch of the local flamenco, after singing as a child in the Escolania of the Basilica of La Merced de His city (hence the artistic name), José Mercé took his first steps on the Flamenco Thursdays of Jerez and in Cadiz tablao La Cueva del Pájaro Azul.

At age 13 he arrived in Madrid to record his first album produced by Manuel Ríos Ruiz, who later wrote: "The consolidation of José Mercé as the new figure of cante means for Jerez de la Frontera the continuity of the miracle jondo." In the capital sang in the tablao Torres Bermejas and later in the company of Antonio Gades, participating in 1981 in the film Wedding of blood, of Carlos Saura. Later he collaborated with the National Ballet, won the National Contest of Flamenco Art in Cordoba in 1986 and returned to work with Saura in the film Flamenco in 1995.

José Mercé has published 17 albums since his debut in 1968. Among the important works include Verde junco (1983) with Tomatito and Enrique de Melchor, Caminos reales del cante (1987), Hondas Roots (1991) and Desnudando el Alma (1994) ). In 1998 he began his jump to popularity, his definitive takeoff with the album Del amanecer, produced by Vicente Amigo. After that success was increased with Aire (2000) that reached the Double Platinum and Lio (2002), that the own Mercé defines like "a disc made with the heart". Later came Confí de fuá (2004), Lo que no se da (2006), Grandes éxitos (2007) and Ruido (2010), which was # 1 in digital downloads on iTunes. Among the many awards received by José Mercé are the Andalusian Medal in 2010 and the 2007 appointment as Favorite Son of the Province of Cadiz.
