José Manuel Zapata

Zapata, a talented lyric singer born in Granada, has become a prominent figure in the world of opera. His passion for music led him to begin his vocal studies in Madrid with the renowned Toñi Rosado Casas, but his refinement came at the hand of Ana Luisa Chova at the prestigious Conservatorio Superior de Música de Valencia. In addition, he has had the opportunity to participate in master classes and refresher courses with renowned teachers such as Yelena Obraztsova, Pedro Lavirgen, Renata Scotto, Victoria de los Ángeles, among others, who have influenced his development as a lyric singer.
His debut in 2001 with the role of Albazar in Rossini’s opera The Turk in Italy at the Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo, under the direction of Alberto Zedda, marked the beginning of a successful career. Since then, Zapata has been awarded the Ópera Actual 2006 Award and the Lírica Teatro Campoamor Award for his outstanding performance of Idreno in Rossini’s Semiramide, at the Gran Teatro del Liceo in Barcelona.
Among his most outstanding performances is the role of Elvino in Bellini’s La sonámbula, under the direction of maestros Jorge Rubio and Cristóbal Soler, in renowned theaters such as the Gayarre de Pamplona and the Palacio de la Música de Valencia, respectively. He has also surprised audiences with his versatility interpreting roles such as Count Alberto in Rossini’s La ocasión hace al ladrón, Cavalier Belfiore in The Journey to Reims at the Warsaw National Opera, Porcus in the Spanish premiere of Joan of Arc at the Stake by Honegger, and Libenskof in Il Viaggio a Reims in Pésaro, just to mention a few.

In addition, in 2006 he had the privilege of performing the Requiem in D minor, KV 626 with the prestigious Orquesta Ciudad de Granada under the baton of Jean-Jacques Kantorow, an experience that left an indelible mark on his career.
Not only is he limited to the world of opera, in 2008 he shared the stage with the renowned singer Pasión Vega in their joint live show Tango: Mano a Mano. This project, presented at the Teatro Isabel la Católica in Granada and the Teatro Real in Madrid, allowed him to show his versatility interpreting classic Argentine tangos. The success was such that Sony Music edited the project on CD with the same name, where Zapata sings in duet with renowned artists such as Miguel Poveda, José Mercé, Rocío Márquez, Marina Heredia, Pasión Vega and Ángela Cervantes.
