SARA BARAS

Spanish dancer and choreographer. Sara Pereira Baras was born on April 25, 1971 in the city of Cádiz, where her parents lived then, Concha Baras (María de la Concepción Baras Herrera), flamenco dance teacher and also a dancer with a long career leading her own company, and the marine infantry colonel Cayetano Pereira.

Antonio Canales was at the peak of his career at the time. Sara joined his company as a guest artist in the Gitano production (1996-1997), presented at the Seville Biennial and with which he attended the Autumn Festival of Madrid at the Albéniz theater before touring the main venues in Spain. The association between both dancers lasted until the beginning of 1999, but before, taking advantage of the suspension of a new show by Canales, La Cenicienta, which she had to star, decided to form her own company.

Sara presented her own company, the Flamenco Ballet Sara Baras, in late 1997 at the close of the XXXVII National Festival of Cante de las Minas, and received the approval of critics and audiences. In April of the following year, with a show that called Sensaciones, a tour through the different flamenco palos in which a farruca danced with trousers that put the Murcia Auditorium on its feet, the great takeoff began, and in 1999, the premiere, at the Villamarta de Jerez theater in Sueños, a new production of her company, placed her definitively in the sphere of prestige that she occupies after winning the first of the four Max awards with which she has been distinguished.
