Last Saturday, February 22, the barrels that take care the wine of the González Byass Winery in Jerez de la Frontera witnessed a magical night with the guitar of Antonio Rey as the protagonist. Framed within the Festival Flamenco de Jerez, the concert began at 23:00, in an atmosphere impregnated with the aroma of sherry wine and the vintage air of the winery, the beginning was expected with total admiration and respect from an audience that came from all over the world, but with a common purpose: to enjoy the genius of the Master. Undoubtedly, a unique and special atmosphere was felt.
From the first chords, Antonio Rey captivated the audience performing pieces from his album Historias de un Flamenco. As the night progressed, the stage was filled with different shades and colors with the gradual incorporation of his group: First las palmas and los coros of Raúl Obregón and Yona Luna, followed by the second guitar and bass of Manuel Pinto and Ismael Alcina, with whom they performed a beautiful alegría. The show was ‘in crescendo’ and covered a wide variety of palos and rhythms, to which Ané Carrasco’s percussion was also added. From the most joyful to the most heartfelt, none of them fail to dazzle with the Master’s unique stamp.
The show reached high points with the appearance of the guest artists. First, Tony Rey, who delighted the audience with a bolero that touched the soul of all those present, followed by the incomparable voice of Mara Rey, who raised the emotion with her voice. Finally, José Rey, the maestro’s nephew, added a modern touch with his personal interpretation during the fin de fiesta culmination. It was a colossal moment in which Mara Rey, in a fit of passion, took off her shoes to give herself completely to dance and singing, leaving the audience astonished.
The night witnessed a well-deserved sold out and a truly emotional final ovation. With the audience on their feet surrendering to the mastery of Antonio Rey and his band, notable figures such as the mayoress of Jerez and other personalities of the city, who did not hesitate to go backstage after the performance to congratulate the artists. At the exit, a crowd waited impatiently for photos, autographs and records of the master.
This concert was special not only because it was part of the prestigious Festival Flamenco de Jerez, but also because of the personal meaning it had for Antonio Rey: returning to his hometown after his recent Grammy nomination in Los Angeles and receiving this warm welcome. It is clear: Jerez recognizes him, loves him and celebrates him.
Sublime and exceptional. Like the wine that dwells in the barrels of the winery, the music of Antonio Rey was distilled in its maximum expression, leaving an unforgettable taste to all those present. It was a night that will remain in everyone’s memory, reaffirming once again Antonio Rey as one of the greatest exponents of contemporary flamenco.
